Time Saving Design Templates

As a designer it’s important to be able to sketch your ideas down quickly. Getting your ideas onto paper puts order to the chaos in your mind and allows you to edit and develop your designs.

Clear visuals leave no elements open to misinterpretation and allow you to effectively communicate your designs.

Thankfully, designers don’t need to be expert illustrators and during my time in industry I regularly saw templates being used. After all, design development and efficiency are much more important than creating an instagram worthy masterpiece.

As students we were encouraged to create our own design templates to reflect our personal style. I quickly realised I was not a free-hand sketcher - all sense of human anatomy and proportions go out the window when I’m faced with a blank piece of paper! Another option was using regular fashion templates/ croquis but these are all too often just legs… with tiny disproportional torsos - not ideal for creating clear & detailed visuals for Fashion Contour!

Instead, I explored my interest in 3D fashion & technology and created my own avatars using 3D modelling software. This allowed me to tailor the size and look of the model to suit each project and it gave such a realistic impression of what the final garment would look like. These avatars have been a lifesaver for me when it comes to designing and I knew I had to create downloadable photorealistic fashion templates for Contour Atelier.

For the first template, I based the models measurements on the 34B dress forms often used In education and industry.

All files are provided in PDF, JPEG and PNG (with transparent background) formats allowing you to print or open into any application of your choice. There are 4 full length poses and 1 3/4 length pose (all front & back) included and all images are high resolution, allowing you to crop into any image for closer framing.  Page layouts are also included for easy design development or range planning.

When using the templates I often work on an iPad using Adobe Sketch or an iPhone using Procreate Pocket and scans of the real fabrics and components I intend to use. I would be happy to do a post on how to scan and sketch with real fabrics if there is any interest?

I would love you know your thoughts on photorealistic design templates - amazing or creepy?

In the future I plan to add more sizes, looks and skin-tones so I would be happy to hear what you would like to see.
